Teens arrested for stealing car from driveway

Three Rochester Hills teenagers were arrested Sunday evening, October 29, in connection with the theft of a car that was stolen from a driveway in the 800 block of Lynhaven Court in Rochester Hills, authorities said.

Oakland County sheriff's deputies responded about 9:14 p.m. on Sunday to a 26-year-old man who told dispatchers he left his 2012 BMW running and unattended in his driveway while he was inside his residence. The victim said he discovered the car missing after walking back outside of the home.

The sheriff's office said the car has an electronic ignition and that the owner was in possession of the key fob. The victim's Apple iPhone was also in the vehicle when it was stolen, which was used to track the location of the car by using the Find My iPhone app.

Deputies located the vehicle and phone in a church parking lot at Avon and Rochester roads.

The sheriff's office said deputies at the scene noticed two people walking away from the building, who were subsequently detained. A K-9 unit responding to the scene tracked a scent from the stolen vehicle to the location where the two people were detained on Avon Road.

During the initial investigation, a third person was identified to investigators and taken into custody at his residence.

The teenage boys, ages 19, 16 and 15, were taken to the Rochester Hills substation and interviewed by detectives with the sheriff's auto theft unit.

The case is under investigation.
