Rochester Hills man shot by wife

February 23, 2018

A Rochester Hills man who was shot in the back by his wife on Sunday afternoon, February 18,  in the 50 block of Sugar Pine Road, was treated for the wound at McLaren Hospital and released later the same evening.

Sheriff's deputies responded about 3:40 p.m. to the home, after a 40-year-old woman called 911 and said she accidentally shot her husband. Deputies and paramedics with the Rochester Hills Fire Department arrived to find the victim, 39, had suffered a gunshot wound to his back, above his right hip. The bullet appeared to have exited the area of his lower abdomen.

Deputies said the wife, who was still at the home when they arrived, said she was putting her handgun away when she slipped on the tile floor in the foyer and accidentally shot her husband in the back.

Deputies recovered a Walther PK .380 handgun, which was resting on a table in the foyer. Deputies also found a second handgun lying in the snow in some landscaping outside of the house.

The woman told deputies the second gun was also hers and that she must have accidentally dropped it outside sometime earlier in the week. The husband isn't legally authorized to be in possession of a firearm.

The couple's 14-year-old son was home at the time of the shooting. Investigators said the teen was in an upstairs room wearing headphones and playing video games, and was unaware the shooting had occurred.

The sheriff's department is continuing to investigate.
