Rochester Hills boy seeking directions shot at

A 53-year-old Rochester Hills man was arrested Friday morning, April 13, by Oakland County sheriff's deputies after allegedly firing a gun at a local teenager who stopped at the house and asked for directions to his school.

The 14-year-old boy had apparently woken up late for school on Friday and missed his bus, so tried to walk to class at Rochester High School. The boy told authorities he knocked on a stranger's door about 8:20 a.m. to ask for directions to the school from a homeowner in the 220 block of S. Christian Hills Drive.

It was at that time that deputies responded to the house after a woman called 911 saying someone tried to break into their home. The woman said a black male was trying to break into her home, and her husband chased him away with a 12-gauge shotgun, firing a round toward him as he ran away.

Deputies located the boy down the street. No injuries were reported.

The incident appears to have stemmed from a belief that the boy was trying to commit a crime based on his race. All of the parties were transported to the Rochester Hills substation and interviewed by detectives.

"I feel so bad for this (boy's) mom and young man and am incredibly angry at this disturbing event in our county, state and country," Bouchard said. "We will seek all applicable charges. There is no world where this is acceptable."

The male homeowner was arrested and lodged at the Oakland County Jail pending charges.

The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office on Friday morning said charges against the husband are expected this afternoon, which could include assault and/or attempted murder.
