A Rochester Hills man was the victim of credit card fraud on Monday, June 4, when an unknown person gained access to his information and attempted to make several purchases, authorities said.
The victim told the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, Rochester substation, that he received a notification that someone tried to use his Visa credit card to make an online purchase at a sporting goods store in New Jersey totaling $4,796.
The issuing bank told the victim several attempted purchases were declined. However, the charge at the sporting goods store was eventually approved later after the purchaser contacted the bank and convinced them he was the owner of the card.
The charge was subsequently cancelled.
The victim also contacted the store where the order was placed and was able to alert them of the issue prior to the items being shipped.
