‘Employees’ try to scam bank with phony checks

In two separate incidents, people who said they were employed by a Birmingham Hungry Howie's location came into the Bank of Ann Arbor and tried to cash fraudulent paychecks.

In the first incident, on Friday, August 10, a man came into the Bank of Ann Arbor, 33600 Woodward Avenue, claimed he worked at Hungry Howie's and was cashing his paycheck from them. A bank employee called Hungry Howie's to verify his employment, and learned he was not employed there. During the phone call, the man left the bank, leaving the fraudulent check.

He is described as a black male, approximately 35-years-old, about 180 pounds, with a mustache, short beard and shaved black hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt with white birds on it, black shorts and black tennis shoes.

Birmingham police are investigating.

In the second incident, Birmingham police were again dispatched to the Bank of Ann Arbor when a woman attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The woman, a 21-year-old from Detroit, said she worked at Hungry Howie's and was cashing her paycheck from them.

She later admitted she did not work for the pizza chain and that the check was fraudulent.

She was arrested by Birmingham police for uttering and publishing.
