Resident sent $38,000 to scammer

On Monday, October 15, a resident reported to Bloomfield Township police that over a six-month time period, he had been fleeced out of $38,000 from a caller who claimed he was a computer technician.

The resident, who lives in the 6200 block of Telegraph Road, reported to officers who responded to the fraud complaint that over the past six months a middle-aged man with a foreign accent had contacted him several times, each time identifying himself as a computer technician. The caller stated he had restored the resident's credit accounts and cleared his computer of multiple viruses. In return, he ordered the resident to purchase several gift cards from various retailers and supply the caller with the serial numbers as payment.

The resident was victimized out of a total of $38,000.

Bloomfield Township police said the case is currently under investigation.
