Online phishing scam reported in township

March 22, 2019

Bloomfield Township police are warning residents of a potential online phishing scam that targeted a resident on Wednesday, March 13, through her email account.

Police said the resident told officers she received an email from an unknown sender demanding $1,000 worth of bitcoin to be deposited into an account. The email further stated that the woman's computer had been hacked, and that her personal information would be compromised if she didn't pay.

Upon further investigation, police determined the email was a phishing scam that had been sent to multiple people.

Police said residents should be advised that such scams are becoming increasingly popular, and warn against ever depositing money into someone's account unless they are certain it is legitimate.

Anyone with questions regarding possible scams may contact the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248.433.7755.
