Concerts in park, Movie Nights begin soon

Despite the cooler than normal spring weather, summer is on the horizon, and with that, time honored traditions in Birmingham will begin, including the popular In the Park concert series in Shain Park and Movie Nights at Booth Park.

The In the Park concert series on Friday, June 14, at 7 p.m. with the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition Youth Action Board's Teen Summer Concert. During this substance-free event, local high school students will celebrate the end of school with a performance in Shain Park.

Regular concerts are held Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. from June 19 through August 14. In addition, those who visit Shain Park on their lunch break will enjoy afternoon concerts on July 10 and August 14 from 12 -2 p.m.

The United States Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors will perform a special patriotic concert on Sunday, July 7, at 7 p.m. Known as America's Big Band, the Jazz Ambassadors are the premier touring jazz orchestra of the United States Army, first formed in 1969. The 19-piece ensemble has received critical acclaim throughout the United States and abroad.

“It’s truly an honor to welcome the United States Jazz Ambassadors back in Birmingham this year. The group celebrates 50 years this year and we’re thrilled to be a part of their touring schedule,” said Birmingham Director of Public Services Lauren Wood. “We have an excellent lineup of bands all throughout the summer and look forward to another great In the Park Summer Concert series.”

There will be three Movie Nights this summer, all scheduled to be under the stars at Booth Park, weather permitting. Sponsored by the Birmingham Shopping District, Movie Nights are scheduled for Friday, June 14, with Zootopia. Pre-show entertainment at 7:30 will include a live performance by Four Stories, a photo opportunity with Birmingham police vehicles, officers and the Detroit Tigers Mascot, Paws, followed by the movie at dusk.

On Friday, July 12, the movie will be The Sandlot; and on Friday, August 23, Monsters, Inc. will be shown.

Movie Nights are free for everyone and include complimentary popcorn, ice cream, water and giveaways, while supplies last. A Wahlburgers Food Truck will be at each Movie Night.

In the event of inclement weather, Movie Night will be held the next night, Saturday. Monitor the Birmingham Shopping District Facebook page for updates.
