Firework restrictions added in Bloomfield Hills

The number of days to legally set off fireworks in Bloomfield Hills will be restricted to about 11 days each year under an ordinance approved on Tuesday, June 11, by the city commission.

Bloomfield Hills City Manager David Hendrickson said the state at the end of 2018 adopted new provisions on the state law that now allows municipalities to adopt local ordinances providing that consumer fireworks only be ignited on specific days and times.

Under the new ordinance, fireworks can only be ignited, discharged or used on the following 11 days (12 if July 5 is a Friday or Saturday): December 31 until 1 a.m. on January 1; the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m. on each of those days; June 29 through July 4, until 11:45 p.m. on those days, and July 5 if the date is a Friday or Saturday, until 11:45 p.m.; and the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Labor Day, until 11:45 p.m.

The ordinance cuts the days back for firework use from 30 days to 11 or 12, depending on the calendar.

City commissioners unanimously passed the ordinance.
