Driver injured after colliding with truck

September 13, 2019

The driver of a vehicle that crashed on Friday, September 6, into the rear of a semitrailer on Woodward near Long Lake Road in Bloomfield Hills had to be extricated from his vehicle by firefighters and suffered serious injuries, a Bloomfield Hills public safety official said.

Bloomfield Hills Public Safety responded about 12:32 p.m. to a two-vehicle accident in the area. First responders said a passenger vehicle rear-ended a semitrailer, and that the driver of the passenger vehicle was trapped in the car and sustained multiple injuries.

Bloomfield Hills Public Safety Sgt. Steve Splan said first responders from Bloomfield Township assisted at the scene. He said firefighters spent about 20 minutes removing parts of the damaged vehicle from around the driver before it was determined that special rescue airbags were needed. Personnel from the Bloomfield Township Fire Department responded with airbags.

"Crews from Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township worked simultaneously inside and outside of the vehicle performing patient care and assessment and extrication techniques," Splan said. "The victim was successfully extricated from the vehicle and transported to Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak for evaluation and treatment."

Splan said the driver was listed in serious but stable condition.

Members of the South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team (SOCCIT) are investigating the crash. Drugs and/or alcohol aren't believed to have been a factor.
