A Detroit man who ran from police after stealing several items from a Bloomfield Township department store complained of a head injury on Monday, December 2, after allegedly head butting a police officer.

Bloomfield Township police responded about 7:45 p.m. to a shoplifting complaint at Five Below, 2145 Telegraph Road, where an employee said a young man with a backpack left the store with several stolen items. Police at the scene located the man in the parking lot, who then ran from officers.

Police said the man ran through the parking lot and across Telegraph Road while emptying his pockets of the stolen merchandise. Officers quickly caught up with the man and placed him under arrest. However, while escorting the suspect, Ray-Quan Watts, 20, of Detroit, Watts allegedly became belligerent and head butted one of the officers.

Following the assault, Watts told officers he had suffered an injury. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac by Bloomfield Township Fire/Rescue for a medical evaluation. Hospital staff cleared Watts before he was taken into custody at the Bloomfield Township Police Department.

Watts was charged the following day with misdemeanor retail fraud and felony assault of a police officer. He was arraigned on Wednesday, December 4, before 48th District Court Magistrate Andra Richardson and held in Oakland County jail on a $250,000 cash bond.
