Uber reward proves to be a scam

January 31, 2020

A Bloomfield Township resident thought he was receiving a $2,500 refund from Uber, when in reality, he had been scammed out of $2,500 on Monday, January 20.

The resident, who lives in the 6000 block of Burnham Court, made an identity theft/fraud complaint with Bloomfield Township police. He told officers he had received a call from what he thought was a representative from Uber, who told him his name was “Christopher Brown.” The person stated they wanted to reward the victim with a refund, and needed his bank account information in order to deposit his reward. The victim provided the caller with his bank account information.

Rather than receiving a reward, the victim discovered that $2,500 had actually been withdrawn from his account.

The case is currently under investigation with the Bloomfield Township Police.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department reminds the public that these types of frauds are common, and not to provide anyone with personal information unless you can verify the validity of the request.
