Rochester Hills man hooked by phishing scam

June 1, 2018

A Rochester Hills man on Thursday, May 24, told authorities he fell victim to a phishing email scam that was disguised as a security message from Apple.

The man, 56, said he received an email he believed was from Apple ID security that indicated his account was locked due to suspicious activity. The email directed the man to an online document he was instructed to fill out in order to regain access to his account.

During the course of filling out the document, the man provided his Social Security number and credit card information. He then sent the form back to the requester. After sending the form, the man said he realized that Apple hadn't initially requested his Social Security number or credit card information. The man then cancelled his credit card and contacted the Federal Trade Commission, as well as the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
