Founded by Richard Grinstein, Grinstein Jewelry & Design, of Birmingham is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Born and raised in Detroit, Grinstein studied metalsmithing at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Since launching his career, he has been creating distinctive jewelry designs for his store while also crafting one-of-a-kind custom pieces for clients. He founded his business in Royal Oak in 1976 before relocating to Birmingham, first at 280 North Woodward and later to its current location at 162 South Old Woodward in Birmingham, in 1999. Reflecting on the move, Grinstein notes that Birmingham’s vibrant arts community was a major draw. At the time, the city was home to numerous art galleries, including Peggy deSalle’s Little Gallery on East Maple Road. “Peggy showed Cranbrook artists and taught people that jewelry could be an artform,” he said. Inspired by both Art Nouveau and Modernism, Grinstein has developed a signature style that blends the organic beauty of nature with clean, contemporary design. While the influences may seem contrasting, they work harmoniously throughout his collections. “Most of my work, whether it’s Art Nouveau or Modernism, is inspired by nature,” said Grinstein. “One example is a design I created for more than 40 years that was inspired by locust leaves, which have a very simple shape.” Working in platinum, gold, palladium, and sterling silver, and incorporating unusual colored gemstones and diamonds, Grinstein creates pieces that combine artistry, craftsmanship, and lasting value. His work appeals to clients who view art as an integral part of their lives and seek jewelry that is both beautiful and meaningful. In addition to Richard Grinstein’s original studio creations, Grinstein Jewelry & Design offers a full range of in-store services, including jewelry repair, pearl restringing, ring resizing, and professional cleaning. The store also features a carefully curated collection of fine antique jewelry.
