The Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education has started to accept applications from district residents interested in being appointed to an upcoming vacancy on the school board following the resignation of trustee Jason Tejani effective December 31.
The board has said it has approved a transparent process for inviting qualified members of the community to apply for this position through 11:59 p.m. on January 9, 2026.
Following the application period, the board of education will review all eligible applications, and at the January 20 board meeting will select candidates for interviews, according to a release from the board. Candidates selected for interviews will be invited to participate in a public interview process on January 24. The board anticipates appointing a new board member following the interview process, in accordance with Michigan law.
The individual appointed by the board will serve until the next regularly scheduled election in November 2026. At that time, the board seat currently held by Tejani will be placed on the ballot for election to complete the remainder of the term, which expires in December 2030.
To support prospective applicants, the board will host a candidate information forum on January 6, from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. This forum will provide an overview of board service and expectations, and offer individuals an opportunity to ask general questions about serving on the board of education, the district announcement said.
