Honor original mission

My family’s business operated in Birmingham for more than sixty years, and although I no longer live in the city, I still care deeply about its future. The Community House has always been one of Birmingham’s most important gathering places, a space where people of all ages and backgrounds could come together. That purpose matters now more than ever.
The current conflict surrounding The Community House is troubling, not only because of the legal and financial issues, but because it has overshadowed the building’s original mission. This institution was created to serve the community, and any decision about its future should honor that intent.
Birmingham is experiencing a period of growth and renewed energy. Losing The Community House would be a loss for everyone. I hope Downtown Newsmagazine will continue to cover this issue with clarity and balance, as many of us with long ties to the city are watching closely.
