Max Surnow, founder and CEO of Cooper Street Snacks, has been named a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year 2026 Michigan and Northwest Ohio Award by Ernst & Young LLP (EY US). Now in its 41st year, the Entrepreneur of the Year program recognizes leaders who drive innovation, economic growth and long-term business impact. An independent panel selected Surnow among 34 finalists representing 31 companies, evaluating candidates on entrepreneurial spirit, purpose, company growth and lasting value creation. “This recognition is incredibly meaningful because Cooper Street was built with grit, family values and a belief that better-for-you snacks could succeed in a crowded market,” said Surnow. “What began as a small family business has grown into an international brand and manufacturing platform serving customers across retail, airlines, e-commerce and foodservice.” Founded in Birmingham in 2011 by Max, Sam and Elaine Surnow, Cooper Street Snacks was inspired by a family recipe passed down from their great-grandmother more than 100 years ago. Built without outside funding and still 100 percent family-owned, the company has grown from three employees to a team of 50. What started with a single recipe has expanded into more than 100 SKUs across multiple product lines. Under Surnow’s leadership, Cooper Street recently acquired and revitalized a 50,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, transforming the company into a vertically integrated snack brand and manufacturing platform positioned for long-term growth. Regional award winners will be announced June 17 in Detroit. Winners will advance to consideration for the national Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in November.
