OPTIK Birmingham, located at 247 W. Maple Road, is celebrating an important milestone: 25 years of serving the greater Birmingham community. Owned and operated by Dr. Joe Ales, OD, the practice combines comprehensive eye health care and vision correction services with an impressive collection of exclusive contemporary eyewear. Over the past quarter century, OPTIK Birmingham has flourished, growing fivefold since its founding and establishing itself as a destination for both eye care and distinctive eyewear. “There are still some independent designers left on the planet who design and have their frames manufactured. I’ve been to their factories south of Paris, Berlin and north of Venice. More and more optical places and doctor’s offices are being bought out by large companies. So, in some sense, my work is old school. I have frame lines that you won’t find in other shops. These are handmade products that are well made. That’s why my business has always grown — you come in here and you have a unique experience,” said Ales. In addition to its unique selection of contemporary frame lines, OPTIK Birmingham boasts the largest collection of original, unused vintage eyewear in Michigan, offering customers access to rare and distinctive styles. On the vision health side of the practice, OPTIK features a team of four opticians who provide thorough and personalized eye care for both adults and children. Services include comprehensive eye examinations, glaucoma screenings; digital retinal scans for early detection of macular degeneration; as well as diagnosis and treatment options for presbyopia and dry eye disease and more. As OPTIK Birmingham marks its 25th anniversary, the practice continues to blend personalized patient care, specialized expertise, and a carefully curated eyewear collection that sets it apart in an increasingly corporate optical marketplace.
