Papa Joe’s sold its Birmingham location at 34244 Woodward Avenue to Market Square in January 2026. Since then, renovations have been underway as the new owners begin transforming the space. Market Square, owned by the Karmo family since 1988, operates additional locations in West Bloomfield and on Southfield Road in Birmingham, as well as Market Fresh in Beverly Hills. Store Director Danny Elia recently outlined several of the updates planned for the newly acquired store. The project is currently in phase one of a five-phase renovation plan, with completion expected in summer 2027. Improvements will include a redesigned layout aimed at creating a more efficient and enjoyable shopping experience. New lighting has already been installed, with additional upgrades planned. Market Square also plans to partner with a local coffee company to introduce a coffee and smoothie bar at the front of the store, complete with an outdoor walk-up window. Customers can expect more competitive pricing across several categories, including wine, bulk candy and nuts, and prepared foods such as soups. Additional enhancements include new office space, a staff lunchroom, and updated public restrooms. The store will remain open throughout all phases of construction to continue serving customers during the renovation process. “We want to simplify, we want to organize, we want to make it easier for shoppers to shop and get what they want,” said Elia. “In this store, we are going to grow the grocery at least 20-30 percent to where it makes it more of a destination — a one stop shop and you can get anything you want — and if you can’t find what you want, we will get it for you.”
