Sundance Shoes, a women’s boutique specializing in footwear, apparel and accessories, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in downtown Birmingham. Owned and operated by Katie Ray Johnston, Sundance Shoes reflects a longstanding family tradition in the footwear business while continuing to evolve with the changing tastes and needs of its customers. Over the past decade, the boutique has become a destination for shoppers seeking distinctive fashion and a welcoming, community-focused shopping experience. The family’s roots in shoe retail date back generations. Johnston’s grandfather owned Kings Bootery in Detroit, laying the foundation for what would become a family legacy in the industry. The original Sundance Shoes was founded in 1973 by Johnston’s father, Robert Wolk, who operated locations at Northland Center and Fairlane Town Center. A third store later opened in West Bloomfield, where it served customers for 34 years. When the Birmingham location opened in 2016, the West Bloomfield store was still in operation. Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the West Bloomfield location closed, and the business expanded its reach by launching a successful online store. Johnston remains committed to creating an inclusive shopping experience for women of all ages. “I want to be able to outfit, whether it’s clothing or footwear or a cool hat, for all ages,” she said. “I want the girl who is in sixth grade but now wears women’s sizes to be able to come to the store with her mom and her grandma, and they can all find something.”
