Second annual jewelry competition seeks entries

Grinstein Jewelry and Design in downtown Birmingham has announced the second annual Grinstein Jewelry Scholarship Competition, open to all local high school juniors and seniors attending jewelry classes, with the top three receiving scholarship prizes.

The competition is generously co-sponsored this year by the Michigan Silversmith Guild.

Longtime Birmingham jeweler and designer Richard Grinstein, owner of Grinstein Jewelry and Design, launched the first annual Grinstein Jewelry Scholarship competition last year, open to all local public and private high school juniors and seniors in jewelry classes in Oakland County. The winning entries will be showcased at his store from mid through late-May.

Grinstein Jewelry and Design is located at 162 S. Old Woodward in downtown Birmingham, where Grinstein, a metalsmithing graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, first set up shop in 1976. On his website, it states, “Inspired both by Art Nouveau and Modernism, the seemingly paradoxical combination of these two influences has led to Richard’s unique style. Working in platinum, gold, palladium and sterling silver along with unusual colored gemstones and diamonds, he provides objects of quality and beauty for clients who feel the need for art to be an integral part of their lives.”

Grinstein said he is proud to encourage the next generation of jewelry artists with the Grinstein Jewelry Scholarship Competition. Three independent and esteemed jewelry professionals will judge the competition, and there will be three top prize winners. They will receive scholarships of $500, $250, and $100.

Eligible students should enter one piece of jewelry made in the last year, and complete the online application form, which can be found at grinsteinjewelry.com. The deadline to enter is May 1.

Prize winners will be announced at an awards event at Grinstein Jewelry and Design, with all entries on display, on Saturday, May 12, from 5-7 p.m. The event is open to the public.

All of the winning entries will be displayed at Grinstein Jewelry and Design through Saturday, May 26.
