Woodward Dream Cruise revs up August 18
While the engines have been revving up all summer long, and lawn chairs popping up along Woodward, officially the Woodward Dream Cruise will take place on Saturday, August 18, bringing approximately 40,000 classic cars and more than one million people to Woodward Avenue, where they'll cruise the stretch from 8 Mile to Pontiac.
Adding to the day-long festivities, the Birmingham Cruise Event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, on S. Old Woodward from Merrill Street to Lincoln.
Birmingham's event features 300 classic cars of all makes and models, sponsor exhibits and fun live entertainment. Enjoy seeing Corvettes, Thunderbirds, Model A's, Mustangs (celebrating 60 years), Rolls Royce, and lots more. Car lovers can stop off at food vendors offering freshly-squeezed lemonade, hot dogs, kettle corn, roasted corn, baked goods and frozen treats.
The Chevrolet exhibit will be located in the city's triangle, south of the 555 Building, where Old Woodward meets Woodward Avenue. They will host a variety of displays and activities starting at 9 a.m. Both WXYZ Channel 7 and WOMC 104.3 FM will broadcast live throughout the day from Birmingham and the Chevy event.
Event day registration is open to individual cars, model year 1988 and older, on a first come, first served basis after 9:30 on event day. Enter off Woodward Avenue on Brown Street. Fee is $35 per car.
In Bloomfield Township, the 14th annual Bloomfield Township Classic Car Show will be held at Mercedes-Benz of Bloomfield Hills in conjunction with the Woodward Dream Cruise. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the family-friendly event features classic and specialty cars of all makes and models. The tax-deductible, individual participation registration fee is $50 through August 13, with on-site registration, if space is still available, $60.
In addition to the show cars, the event will feature a viewing area for the Dream Cruise with entertainment, food, general parking and portable restrooms. Admission is free.
Proceeds supports the Bloomfield Hills Optimist Club, Bloomfield Township Police Department Benevolent Fund, and Bloomfield Township Fire Department Charities. The event has raised over $50,000 for charitable cause since it began.
