Phony IRS agent scams woman out of $3,000

A caller identifying herself as an IRS agent scammed a Bloomfield Township resident out of $3,000 worth of Walmart gift cards, she informed police.

On Tuesday, September 4, Bloomfield Township police went to a home in the 1100 block of Winchcombe Drive, where a woman told them she had received a phone call from someone identifying herself as an IRS agent. The victim was told by the fraudulent agent that she owed the IRS $3,000, and was directed to purchase three $1,000 Walmart gift cards in order to pay off her debt.

The victim went and purchased the gift cards, supplied the caller with the activation codes, and then realized this was a scam.

Bloomfield Township police report the case is currently under investigation.
