Check taken from mailbox leads to check fraud

A Bloomfield Township resident who placed Christmas cards and an endorsed check in her mailbox discovered the check had been stolen and she had become a victim of check fraud.

On Saturday, December 22, Bloomfield Township police officers responded to a home in the 6800 block of White Pine for a larceny of mail complaint. The resident informed police she had placed several Christmas cards and an endorsed check in her mailbox. Later that morning, she went back to her mailbox and noticed the check was missing and several other pieces of mail had been opened.

A few days later, the woman told officers, the resident became a victim of check fraud when an unknown person used her bank account number to recreate a fraudulent check and cash it against her account.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department currently has the case under investigation.
