Residents invited to apply for Citizens Academy
Birmingham residents are invited to learn about all aspects of the city government, including the police department, from the inside out, by applying for the 2019 Birmingham Citizens Academy, with applications accepted through Saturday, April 20.
The interactive Birmingham Citizens Academy is an eight-week program that is open to Birmingham residents 18 years old and older, and is designed to provide a fun, informative learning experience for citizens who want to understand how the city operates.
The academy begins Tuesday, April 30, and runs through May 31, with a graduation ceremony at the Birmingham City Commission meeting on Monday, June 3.
All classes are designed to help participants better understand the operation of city departments, including police, fire, building, community development, engineering, department of public services and many more.
Classes are offered on Tuesday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. There are some additional classes on Thursday nights, as well. Downtown walking tours, as well as project tours, provide a detailed look at the services the city provides.
The academy is limited to 30 participants.
