ID thief attempts to buy motorcycle

A woman attempting to purchase a motorcycle on Friday, June 28, by using another person's identity at a Bloomfield Township dealership was arrested in connection with identity theft, police said. Bloomfield Township police were called to Motor City Power Sports, 1645 S. Telegraph Road, about 3:30 p.m. after the finance manager said a woman was inside and attempting to purchase a motorcycle using a fraudulent identity. The manager told police he received a call earlier in the day from a woman who claimed to be the victim of identity theft. The victim told the manager that a credit application from Motor City Power Sports was opened fraudulently in her name. The manager found an online credit application containing the woman's personal information. About 3:15 p.m., the suspect, who was identified as Viola Reneese McDowell, 28, entered the store and identified herself using the victim's name, police said. The suspect presented the store manager with what appeared to be a Michigan driver's license containing the victim's name. Police said McDowell attempted to purchase a 2019 Yamaha motorcycle valued at $9,000. The manager delayed the purchasing process until police could arrive. McDowell was arrested on suspicion of identity theft and fraud. She was arraigned on June 30 in 48th District Court and given a bond of $25,000, or 10 percent. She is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 8.
