Men fight over woman at Birmingham bar

A late night fight on Saturday, July 21, that left one man with injuries to his head at a nightclub in downtown Birmingham apparently started after one of the combatants began talking to the other's girlfriend, police said.

Birmingham police responded about 1 a.m. on Sunday, July 22, to the complaint of an assault that had just taken place at The Rose Room 220, 220 East Merrill Street. The bar, which is billed as an upscale lounge and cocktail bar "Where the night begins, and ends," occupies the lower level portion of the 220 Restaurant. Officers arrived to find the victim, 27, of West Bloomfield, bleeding from the head.

The victim told police he was talking to a friend when he was struck from behind with a glass or bottle. A security guard told police the victim had been arguing with another man and the two engaged in a fist fight and had to be separated. Officers also were told the victim was talking to the other man's girlfriend when he was hit in the head.

Police are investigating the assault.
