Shoplifter stopped at sporting goods store

A Pontiac man attempting to steal nearly $200 in merchandise from a Bloomfield Township sporting goods store was arrested in connection with retail fraud on Saturday, July 20, police said.

Bloomfield Township police responding to a theft complaint about 3 p.m. arrived at DICK'S Sporting Goods to find a man leaving the store with a black gym-style duffle bag. Moments later, a store employee told officers they believed the man had just taken merchandise from the store without paying.

Officers stopped the man and discovered about $188 in merchandise concealed in the bag.

The store manager told police the theft was captured by store security cameras, and that two employees witnessed the theft.

The man was arrested for suspicion of retail fraud. Police said the man is currently on parole, and that investigators contacted his parole officer and advised they would be seeking a warrant.

The man is being held at the Oakland County Jail.
