Oakland County provides flu vaccines

The Oakland County Health Division on Monday, October 14, will kick off its annual flu vaccination program, with shots to be offered at offices in Pontiac and Southfield.

The Health Division made the announcement following a shipping delay. The vaccine protects against as many as four flu viruses that are most likely to occur this season.

"Protect yourself and loved ones with an annual flu shot," said Oakland County Health Officer Leigh-Ann Stafford. "Vaccination can reduce the risk of getting the flu and help protect the health of others in the community."

Flu shots are available for $24 at both health division offices in Pontiac and Southfield. Individuals 65 years and older qualify for a high-dose flu shot, which costs $53. FluMist, the nasal spray flu vaccine, also is available for $30.

Hours of operation for vaccinations are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Pre-payment and registration aren't needed at the walk-in clinics. The North Oakland Health Center is located at 1200 N. Telegraph Road, Building 34 East in Pontiac. The South Oakland Health Center is located at 27725 Greenfield Road in Southfield.

A community clinic also will be held on Wednesday, October 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois.

Payment options include cash, credit, Medicare, Medicaid, most Blue Cross Blue Shield plans and Blue Care Network, and additional insurances. The health division participates in the Vaccines for Children Program, which offers vaccines at no cost for eligible children up to 18-years-old. There is a sliding/discounted fee schedule available and no one will be denied access to services due to inability to pay.
