Police warn of computer email scam
Bloomfield Township police are warning residents of a computer scam that tricked a township man out of $300 on Saturday, January 18, while at his home in the 5000 block of Deepwood Street. Officers responded about 4 p.m. on Saturday to a fraud complaint where the victim said he received an email stating his "Microsoft Windows 7 would no longer be supported" and that he needed to upgrade to Windows 10 for $300. The victim followed the prompts and provided his bank information to what he thought was a Microsoft representative. After the transaction, the victim became suspicious and contacted Geek Squad at Best Buy who confirmed he was the victim of an online scam. "The Bloomfield Township Police Department would like to remind the public to verify unsolicited emails and phone call from companies requesting your personal and financial information," said Lt. Paul Schwab with the department's investigations division.
