Thieves target local Speedway gas station

Birmingham police recently responded to two theft complaints that occurred at Speedway gas station, 34800 Woodward Avenue, in Birmingham, including one during which a suspect was caught. Police responded about 10 p.m. on Monday, January 6, to the gas station for a complaint that someone stole several lottery tickets. Witnesses told police a man ripped several lottery tickets from a roll of scratch off tickets from under a cashier counter, then left without paying. The case is under investigation. Th second theft occurred on Thursday, January 16, when officers were in the parking lot of the gas station conducting a traffic stop when they received a call that a man was inside stealing several items. Officers approached the man and found that he had several items in the pocket of his coat and a pack of cigarettes in his waistband. The man, 50, of Highland Park, told police he wasn't planning on paying for the items. He was arrested on suspicion of retail fraud.
