Township resident scammed of $2,000

Claiming to be with a Bloomfield Township resident's mother, a male caller scammed a resident out of almost $2,000. On Friday, March 13, officers went to a home in the 300 block of Kendry Drive on a fraud complaint. The victim informed them she had received a phone call from a man who claimed to be with his mother, and that he needed money because he owed several people money. The caller gave the township resident instructions to download the phone app, “Cash App,” and to use it to deposit $450 into an account named “Keaunae.” After several attempts to open the app and transfer the money, the victim failed to transfer the funds. The caller instructed her to use another name, and she was able to transfer the money. The caller then called back and said he needed more money, so the victim transferred an additional $1,500. Once the money was transferred, the caller hung up the phone. The township resident then called her father to check on the welfare of her mother. Her father stated her mother was safe, and at work at the time the victim received the fraudulent phone call. Bloomfield Township police said the victim was able to recover some of the funds through her bank. The case is currently under investigation.
