A man posing as a member of Apple Support was able to gain remote access to a Birmingham woman’s phone Friday, March 13, after calling the scam number she was prompted with.

According to the woman, she got a text message claiming to be from Apple Support that there was a charge on her account and to call the phone number provided. She said she called the number and spoke to the man who later sent a prompt to her phone that allowed him access to her bank account once she clicked it.

The woman reported that withdrawals were made from her bank account shortly after the call, and she went to her bank to open a fraud case.

Birmingham police say an investigation is ongoing.
