Bike thief arrested and stolen bike recovered

A man accused of stealing a bicycle on Sunday, May 9, from a backyard in the 400 block of Madison Avenue in Birmingham was arrested and the bicycle recovered, police said.

Birmingham police officers responding about 9:12 p.m. to the report of two stolen bicycles arrived to speak with the homeowners. The couple said their backyard backs up to Poppleton Park, and one of them noticed a man sitting at the base of a tree in their backyard about 8 p.m. The wife said the man then asked her for the time before leaving.

The wife said she noticed the same man about 8:45 riding a bicycle through the park just like one that she owns. After checking the area near the garage where they keep the bicycles, she and her husband noticed two of their three bikes were missing.

Officers were able to locate one of the bikes and man at Tim Horton's in Birmingham. Witnesses told police the man arrived at the location on the bicycle.

Birmingham police arrested the man for suspicion of theft. The second bike wasn’t located.
