Birmingham Art Walk Thursday, September 19
Art and shopping – two of life's special enjoyments – are coming together on Thursday, September 19, from 5-8 p.m. with the Birmingham Art Walk event, a free strolling event featuring local businesses and artists, musical performances, special promotions and more.
Birmingham Art Walk is brought to downtown Birmingham by the Birmingham Shopping District (BSD) in partnership with the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center (BBAC) and the city of Birmingham Public Arts Board.
“The Birmingham Art Walk is a great opportunity not only to explore downtown Birmingham’s unique shops and the area’s incredibly talented artists, but also to make personal community connections,” said Erika Bassett, BSD Executive Director. “There’s something very special in getting to know the individuals that own our local shops and restaurants and that contribute to the beauty and culture of our community.”
New to Art Walk this year, the BSD welcomes Jeffrey Floral Architecture, whose amazing sculptural topiaries will adorn the entrances of participating Art Walk businesses. Art Walk attendees may begin their stroll and pick up an event map at any participating business including Daxton Hotel, Lux Travel Girl, Gazelle Sports, Greene & Company, Rotate Boutique, Ethan Allen and others. To see the full list of participating businesses along with additional information, visit ALLINBirmingham.com/events.
There will also be 20 lucky event attendees who will win an incredible night of glitz and glam, winning two tickets to “Moulin Rouge,” which is coming to Detroit's iconic Detroit Opera House this fall, courtesy of Broadway in Detroit. Stop by any participating Art Walk business to enter to win.
“The Birmingham Art Walk is a cultural event that highlights art, fashion and culinary experiences in downtown Birmingham. It gives our local artists an opportunity to present their work in a city where art is a part of everyday life. With several galleries, public art installations, a performing arts theatre, and eclectic collections at both Daxton Hotel and The Townsend Hotel, unique works of art can be found throughout downtown,” said Kamala Cummings, owner of Lux Travel Girl. Lux Travel Girl will host three local artists, including multi-media artist Anita Sewell, abstract expressionist Dawud Shabazz, and acrylic painter Ja’brion Graham.
Matt Broadwell, Gazelle Sports’ manager, is excited to participate in the event again this year. “Having an artist display their work in the store brings fun conversations along with beautiful colors and aesthetics for our guests.”
