Check altered leaves business out $34,000

A Birmingham business on the 300 block of South Old Woodward lost over $34,000 after a check they mailed was altered in order to deposit to a different payee at an out-of-state bank.

Birmingham police were informed on Wednesday, June 12, that the check had been mailed sometime in April, and afterward someone had the payee’s name on the check changed from the originally intended payee. The check was then deposited in a bank outside of Michigan.

Police report an investigation is ongoing.
