A Birmingham police officer conducting a routine check of the public parking structure in the 300 block of North Old Woodward on Friday, August 22, around midnight, observed a truck unsuccessfully attempting to exit through a private delivery gate.

The officer spoke to the driver, a 28-year-old Canton man, and confirmed that the vehicle had struck and damaged the gate. The driver showed signs of intoxication, so the officer conducted field sobriety evaluations and placed the driver under arrest.

While searching the man’s pockets, the officer found a container of a white powdery substance, which tested positive for cocaine. He was charged with operating while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance.
