College student victim of parking pass scam

:

A 19-year-old University of Michigan student from Birmingham became the victim of a parking spot purchase scam on Monday, July 3, after sending over $600 through Venmo to a seller that never followed through.

According to the victim, who lives in the 400 block of Smith Avenue, she joined a social media group for a college parking spot trading and tried to buy a parking spot at the university. She sent the suspect $630 through Venmo to purchase the seller’s parking pass, but the seller, who was using an alias, reportedly blocked her on the app and never sent her the pass.

Birmingham police report that an investigation is ongoing.
