Drunk driver arrested for fleeing Bloomfield police
What appeared initially as a typical traffic stop in Bloomfield Township on the evening of Tuesday, June 11, led to a police chase and arrest for drunk driving as well as fleeing and eluding.
Around 11 p.m., a Bloomfield Township police officer noticed a gray Mazda speeding while going northbound on Telegraph Road at Hickory Grove Road. When the officer got behind the vehicle – preparing for a traffic stop – the driver showed signs of being intoxicated. The officer then activated his emergency lights, only for the driver to continue driving northbound on Telegraph Road, passing Old Telegraph Road.
The officer continued to attempt a traffic stop after activating his emergency siren as well, but the driver kept driving, going up to W. Huron Street, where it turned westbound and then north onto Tilden Ave.
Officers were able to arrive in that area and block the driver from traveling further. After coming to a stop, officers immediately found an unopened beer bottle in the driver’s front seat. The driver then failed a sobriety test before being arrested.
A breathalyzer test back at the police station showed the driver was twice over the legal limit.
The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office issued a one count felony warrant for flee and elude 4th degree, and a one count misdemeanor warrant for operating while intoxicated. The driver was then arraigned at the 48th District Court, where a $15,000 or 10 percent cash bond was issued.
