Foundation decides on ECC, committee chairs

The board of directors of the City of Birmingham Community House Foundation made a couple of decisions on Thursday, July 23, to continue with organization of the community center, including creating committees of the board, and determining the future of the Early Childhood Center(ECC).
According the information released by the board, the foundation considered several proposals for continuing with the ECC and decided to commit to a lease of the space to the Birmingham Public Schools which will be managing the educational aspect of The Community House,
Birmingham Mayor Clinton Baller, who is also a member of the foundation board, said specific lease details with the school district have yet to be finalized but it was decided that the school district would be the best option to bring the ECC program back into operation, hopefully by this fall. Baller said that the district would pay for its leased space for the ECC which in past years had been a profit revenue stream for The Community House.
Foundation officials have also expressed hope that some of the prior ECC staff would return to The Community House.
At the same meeting on July 23, the board named various board members to head up committees to address functions of The Community House.
Committee chairs include:
Finance & Audit:Â Rob Bowen, former director of international finance at Chrysler and former vice president/CFO at the Detroit Institute of Arts; Development & Communications:Â Eva Kirkman, nonprofit consultant, CCS Fundraising; Special Events:Â Linda Solomon, photojournalist and author; Facilities:Â Sam Surnow, president, The Surnow Company, and Robert Denha, founding partner, Vision Investment Partners; and Programming:Â Embekka Roberson, superintendent, Birmingham Public Schools.
Meetings of the foundation board are open to the public for in-person attendance but Zoom attendance that is generally offered at other city meetings has not been established. Meeting dates, agendas and minutes are available on the city’s website.
