An altered check in early September cost a Birmingham resident about $1,000.
On Monday, September 8, at approximately 5 p.m., a 77-year-old female resident of the 2200 block of Yorkshire Road came to the Birmingham Police Department to report that someone had altered a check that she used to pay a business in the 2300 block of Cole Street.
Police said the victim originally wrote the check for $250, but it was cashed for $1,250 after someone added a numeral 1 and changed the word “two” to “twelve”.
Police say an investigation is ongoing.
