Local minister scammed by congregation poser

A local Birmingham minister was scammed out of roughly $600 after someone posing as a person affiliated with the church texted him asking for money.

The minister told Birmingham police that on Saturday, March 7, he got a text message asking him to purchase six $100 Apple gift cards for people in the hospital. He bought the gift cards and sent pictures of the cards, only to later realize the request was a scam.

Birmingham police say an investigation is ongoing.
