Man assaulted with knife in Birmingham

A man panhandling for money on Wednesday afternoon, April 27, in downtown Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a motorist with a knife, police said.

Birmingham officers responded about 3:21 p.m. to the area of Martin and Pierce streets where a man said he was assaulted by a panhandler with a knife. The victim told police he was sitting in his parked vehicle near Martin and Pierce streets when a man approached him and asked for money.

Police said the victim and man exchanged words, at which point the alleged assailant brandished a knife. Officers spoke with both individuals involved, with the panhandler arrested.

Police said the case has been submitted to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for potential charges.
