A 29-year-old man from Birmingham allegedly lost nearly $15,000 worth of cryptocurrency after clicking on a link sent to him through a phishing email.

The man reported to Birmingham police that on Wednesday, April 29, he got a call from a number that displayed “Google” as the caller ID, informing him that his email account might be compromised. He said he later got the email that looked like it was from a known cryptocurrency website, but he realized there were unauthorized transactions on his account after he clicked the link.

Birmingham police report an investigation is ongoing.
