A phone scammer was successfully able to withdraw about $7,500 from a West Bloomfield man’s bank account by posing as a Chase Bank employee and tricking him into granting access.

The victim, who filed the police report on Friday, May 9, at the Birmingham police station, said he got a call from a number that showed Chase Bank as the caller ID a few days prior. The woman on the phone said there was an unauthorized transaction on his account and his cards needed to be canceled and replaced.

He got another call a few days later from the same woman telling him he needed to authorize a pop-up notification to activate his contactless card.

When he hung up the call, the man checked his bank app and saw that the money had been withdrawn from his account. Birmingham police say an investigation is ongoing.
