Phone scammer poses as government employee

A scammer posing as a government employee tricked a 51-year-old Birmingham resident out of thousands of dollars in gift cards and bitcoin.


On Thursday, February 8, the victim walked into the Birmingham police station to file a report. He claimed that someone had called him, claiming to be an employee for a government agency, and was told his Social Security number was compromised. Their interaction ended with the victim short thousands of dollars in the form of gift cards and bitcoin.


Birmingham police report an investigation is ongoing.
