Phony Amazon employee almost scams resident

A Birmingham resident living on the 1200 block of Buckingham was nearly scammed out of $6,500 on Tuesday, September 12, after a caller claiming to be an Amazon employee said she owed money and needed to withdraw the cash.

Reportedly, the caller told the resident she needed to package the money in aluminum foil and bubble wrap, then call the number back for more instructions. Birmingham police were able to help the residents by letting her know it was a scam and following her to the bank to safely put the money back.

According to Birmingham police, an investigation is ongoing.
