Local police were on high alert since Thursday evening after the Beverly Hills Police Department received a concern submitted through the State of Michigan’s anonymous safety reporting system, OK2Say, relative to Groves High school in the Birmingham Schools district.

The report involved a social media post made by a Groves student that included an image depicting several rifles. Importantly, there was no direct threat made toward any individual or toward the school.

According to an email to families in the Groves community, sent by high school principal Othamian Peterson, Sr., the “Beverly Hills Police Department responded immediately and conducted an investigation at the student’s home. Officers have informed us that they do not believe this to be a threat toward our school or toward any students. While this information is reassuring, the school will continue to exercise due diligence and work closely with law enforcement to thoroughly review all aspects of the situation.”

The email further noted that “Out of an abundance of caution, the student will not return to school while the investigation remains active. Additionally, families can expect an increased police presence at Groves and our feeder schools throughout the day tomorrow to provide added reassurance for students and staff. We are grateful to the parents and students who promptly reached out upon seeing this post. Their quick action enabled us to collaborate with law enforcement and respond swiftly.

“As always, we encourage students to speak up whenever they see or hear anything that may pose a safety concern. Reports can be made directly to a trusted adult at school or submitted anonymously through the OK2Say link on our district website or at https://www.michigan.gov/ok2say.

Peterson also asked community members to “Please do not hesitate to contact any Groves administrator if you have information related to this matter or any other concern requiring immediate attention.”
