Police holding open house, bike rodeo July 27

The Birmingham Police Department will hold their annual Open House & Bike Rodeo on Saturday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where the community is invited to learn all about their important work to keep the community safe, meet Therapy K9 Maple and participate in a fun bike rodeo.

The event will take place on Martin Street and Pierce Street near Birmingham City Hall, located at 151 Martin Street. The open house will take place during the Birmingham Shopping District’s Day On The Town retail event.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Grewe and other officers will welcome community members as they demonstrate a variety of resources their department provides and hand out plenty of “swag” and ice cream. Attendees will enjoy an evidence technician demonstration, vehicle display, drone demonstration, driving simulator and photo booth with police props. The community will learn about the Adopt a Senior program, Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, Oakland Community Health Network and Comfort Canine/Therapy Dogs.

“We had a great turnout last year and look forward to welcoming the community again as we demonstrate how hard our officers work to keep Birmingham safe,” said Grewe. “New this year, attendees will have an opportunity to experience a police and fire driving simulator in a 53-foot semi-trailer.”

Attendees will also have an opportunity to operate a pedal cart with intoxication goggles, and the Birmingham Fire Department will demonstrate a simulated vehicle extrication. Birmingham staff members will be available to assist with prescription drug drop off and will hand out free gun safety locks.

In addition, throughout the open house, children of all ages are invited to participate in a bike rodeo featuring a fun and educational bicycle course.

Several different stations will teach basic riding and safety techniques. Attendees will learn about city of Birmingham bicycle licenses (for residents) and receive a basic bicycle inspection, helmet fitting, participation certificate and safety equipment.

For the safety and enjoyment of all, it is important that all participants bring their own bicycles and helmets.
