Scammer poses as fire marshal to trick business

A Birmingham business located on the 3000 block of Woodward Avenue was conned out of $500 on Sunday, June 16, after an employee received a phone call from a scammer posing as the Birmingham fire marshal.

According to the employee, the caller said that the business would be getting new fire equipment in a future UPS delivery, but they needed to purchase Apple gift cards as payment for the delivery. The employee ended up buying the gift cards and sending the information over to the scammer.

Birmingham police said an investigation is ongoing.
